Man United transfer intentions ‘beginning to swirl’ as star becomes available

Manchester United could look to reinforce their defensive ranks despite Michael Carrick currently having five centre‑backs at his disposal

Manchester United’s defensive plans for the summer are beginning to take shape, with Bologna centre‑back Jhon Lucumi emerging as a target. With the 28‑year‑old entering the final year of his contract, speculation over his future is growing, and several European clubs are monitoring the situation.

According to Italian media outlet Il Resto del Carlino, Lucumi has already attracted approaches from Turkish sides. In the Premier League, AFC Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest are also said to have made proposals, though the defender has reportedly put both clubs ‘on hold’ for now.

After featuring five times for Colombia at the World Cup, all of them starts, Lucumi is believed to be waiting to see whether further offers arrive. Juventus and Inter Milan have been mentioned as possible destinations and there is a suggestion that United could look to intensify their interest.

The report notes that talk of interest from the Reds is ‘beginning to swirl’ and that Old Trafford could be an appealing destination for Lucumi. With the World Cup now over, his future is expected to be resolved in the coming weeks.

The Colombian’s previous release clause at Bologna was set at €28m (£23m), but that has since expired. Any club will now have to negotiate a fresh fee with the Italians, and there is a suggestion he could be available for less.

Even so, staying in Serie A remains an attractive option for the defender, leaving Bournemouth and Forest waiting on the sidelines.

Should Lucumi give either club the green light, talks are expected to follow but only if the offers he is holding out for fail to materialise in the coming weeks. Bologna, meanwhile, will be keen for a speedy resolution as they prepare for the new campaign.

United currently have five centre‑back options available: Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven. On paper, that’s enough depth to handle a season in which they’ll be competing across multiple competitions.

However, they won’t start the campaign with a full complement, as De Ligt remains in rehabilitation following back surgery in May, with his absence expected to stretch to around 10 months.

So far, United have completed the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £50m and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35m. Goalkeeper Karl Darlow has also strengthened the squad on a free transfer.
