Manchester United confirm huge injury boost

Man Utd defender Patrick Dorgu has taken the next step in his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained in January.

Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu is back doing individual work on grass as he closes in on a return from a hamstring injury. Dorgu last played for United against Arsenal on January 25.

The Dane was in red-hot form and scored in the 3-2 win against Arsenal at the Emirates, but he was substituted in the closing stages due to an injury. United sources subsequently confirmed Dorgu was facing a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Dorgu returned to the Carrington gym at the end of last month. The club have now announced a fresh update, confirming he is doing individual work as he reaches the final stage of his rehabilitation.

United have said there is no timeline for his return to first-team action. Dorgu will be handled carefully given the nature of the injury, but he could return in time to contribute in the run-in.

Dorgu’s return means he should travel for next week’s training camp at Carlton House in the Republic of Ireland. On Monday, United will travel to Ireland for a four-day intensive boot camp.

Michael Carrick initially suggested Dorgu had gone off against Arsenal with cramp, but it became clear that the problem was more serious when he limped through the exit door at the Emirates.

In December, Dorgu provided an assist for Matheus Cunha at Villa Park, and he built on that performance by scoring a volley in 1-0 victory against Newcastle on Boxing Day.

The Denmark international began 2026 by recording an assist in a draw against Burnley at Turf Moor, a goal against Manchester City in the derby victory, and another goal in the Arsenal win.

Dorgu’s improved form coincided with his relocation to the left wing. When Carrick was asked whether he saw Dorgu as a left-back or a winger in his system, he said: “I think he can do both, to be honest.

“I think he was immense last week [versus City], his work rate and the way he played the position, but the threat, constant threat. And the goal was the obvious one.

“I think his general play was something we were really pleased about. I wouldn’t want to pin him down [to a position], to be honest. But certainly attacking-wise in that threat, he was pretty impressive last week.”
