Manchester United Emi Martinez contact claim made amid Ruben Amorim’s goalkeeper transfer search

Manchester United continue to be linked with a summer transfer swoop for Emi Martinez amid uncertainty around the future of their goalkeeping department

Manchester United continue to be linked with a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez this summer.

Manchester United are alleged to have made contact with Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez six months ago regarding a possible transfer to Old Trafford.

That’s according to Argentinian media outlet TyC Sports, who claim that Ruben Amorim’s side made contact with the 32-year-old in January regarding a move, but opted to keep their faith in Andre Onana.

Despite the faith shown in the United shot stopper, Onana’s performances didn’t improve and the Reds are understood to be keen on signing a new goalkeeper this summer.

Martinez appeared to wave farewell to the Aston Villa faithful in their final home game of the recent Premier League season, before heading to Old Trafford for the final game of the season.

United would run out 2-0 winners with Martinez shown a straight red card during the game, ending the Reds’ winless run at home in the Premier League.

Altay Bayindir started the game in goal for Amorim’s side, but he’s another who has struggled adjusting to life in the Premier League with the club expected to invest in a new goalkeeper.

Reports in Spain claimed that Martinez was a target for United, which is understood to have surprised Aston Villa, who would ask for a high transfer fee this summer.

The recent reports from Argentina claim that Barcelona have also been keeping an eye on Martinez, but look set to push on with their pursuit of Espanyol shot stopper Joan Garcia.

I don’t know, I came here to play for the national team,” Martinez said earlier this week when asked about his future. “That’s the only thing that matters to me right now. The market just opened, there’s still a long way to go.”
