Manchester United Women ran out dominant winners versus London City Lionesses 5-1 yesterday.
The result fired the Red Devils back to the top of the Women’s Super League table as they have scored nine goals in just two matches.
Big moment for Jayde Riviere
The Canadian right back was voted in the WSL team of the season last year and has picked up where she left off last season.
The match against London City was also a special one for Riviere as it was her 50th appearance for United since her move over from Canada.
It was also a memorable afternoon as she scored her first goal for the club with a well taken strike from a tight angle.
A shot
Speaking to the club’s official website, she claimed that her goal was deliberate and not a cross that found its way into the back of the net.
Elaborating on the strike she stated, “I will always be honest! If I had an intention of crossing, I would straight up say it. She (Malard) even asked me on the way here (to the post-match interview]).
Riviere added, “I personally just thought I would shoot. She actually encourages me a lot in training to shoot when I’m in the box. I saw the goalie cheat off her line so I said: ‘Why not?’ I guess I got the benefit on this day.”
Importance of next match
United Women will now turn their attention to the all-important European tie versus SK Brann at the Leigh Sports Village, where they must overcome a one goal deficit to play Champions League football this season.
Commenting on the size of the task in front of her team she said, “we really wanted to focus this week on bouncing back from our Champions League game. We were really disappointed and wanted to really jump into this.”
She continued, “the team we played was a new team, so it’s very interesting the players that they have and we didn’t know what to expect, but I think for us all we can control is how we can play.”
The 24-year-old believes that United have shown “that ruthlessness of the Manchester United identity” so far in the league and that it must be carried into their vital next match on Thursday this week.
