Manchester United have issued a clear message after Bruno Fernandes addressed the possibility of leaving Old Trafford.
Fernandes has been heavily linked with a move away from United over the last couple of weeks, with interest emerging from Al-Hilal. The Manchester Evening News reported that Fernandes was giving the possibility of a move to the Saudi Pro League some serious thought amid suggestions of a potential £100million transfer.
News then emerged on Tuesday claiming that Fernandes had decided against leaving United in favour of a move to Al-Hilal. This was despite the United captain’s agent holding talks with the Saudi Pro League outfit last week ahead of a potential transfer.
Fernandes confirmed on Tuesday that he was approached with the chance to join Al-Hilal, but explained that he decided to stay at United after conversations with his family and head coach Ruben Amorim.
United’s X account (Twitter) posted a graphic which featured the quotes from Fernandes, who was speaking while on international duty for Portugal.
Accompanied with the graphic, United issued a two-word message which read: “Our skipper.”
“There was an opportunity [to join Al-Hilal],” Fernandes told reporters on Tuesday evening. “The president called me and asked if I wanted to go there.
“They were waiting for me. I spoke to coach [Ruben] Amorim. He asked me not to go.
“Manchester United didn’t want to sell me. They don’t need the money. If I had wanted to leave, they would have made it happen.“
“Al Hilal were very kind,” Fernandes added. “They spoke to my agent Then I spoke to my wife. She asked: ‘What do you want to do?’ She always supports my decisions.
“It would have been easy to move there. I know the Portuguese players there very well. But I want to play at the highest level and compete for major titles.
“I can do that, and I still want to. I’m very passionate about football.”
Fernandes will now look to star for Portugal in the Nations League as they face Germany in the semi-final on Wednesday night. If Fernandes and Co. claim a victory in Munich they would then face either Spain or France in the final on Sunday.
