Michael Carrick explains why Mason Mount is missing from Man United squad against Fulham

Mason Mount is missing from Manchester United’s matchday squad against Fulham with Michael Carrick speaking about that injury setback.

Mason Mount is absent from Manchester United‘s Premier League clash against Fulham after picking up a knock in training, interim head coach Michael Carrick is confirmed.

Mount has been in Carrick’s first two squads since replacing Ruben Amorim, playing a small part in the 2-0 win over Manchester City and remaining on the bench against Arsenal last week.

However, the 27-year-old was nowhere to be seen when the matchday squad was announced for Sunday’s match against Fulham. Shea Lacey is on the bench in his place, with Patrick Dorgu also out with an injury.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carrick said: “Just took a bit of a knock in training, it is nothing serious, he will be back very very soon.”

It’s the latest injury concern for Mount during his time with United. He missed Amorim’s final two games in charge against Wolves and Leeds due to a small injury problem.

Last season, he only played 27 matches in all competitions, too, with a hamstring injury forcing him to miss a chunk of football. This term, he has already featured 19 times, scoring three goals.

Matheus Cunha was the man selected by Carrick to replace Dorgu in United’s attack. The Brazil forward has come off the bench in the last two games to make in impact, scoring the winner against Arsenal in north London.

“It was a natural one, especially after thee last two games, with what Matheus offers,” Carrick explained. “He’s got something that’s a little bit different.

“He carries the ball and he’s got a real presence on the pitch and he’s done unbelievably well in both games when he’s come on. It’s disappointing for Patrick [Dorgu]. He’s had two fantastic performances since I’ve been here, in so many different ways.”

Dorgu is set for a period on the side-lines after picking up an injury in their victory at Arsenal. “Pat, unfortunately, he’s going to be out for a period of time,” Carrick said. “We’re still working through how long that’s going to be.

“We’ll have to see, [it’s] disappointing, he’s had such a big couple of weeks, Pat. We weren’t sure whether it was a little bit of cramp or whether it was something a little bit more serious and at the moment it looks a little bit more on the serious note.

“So, it’ll be a few weeks for that. How many weeks? We’ll have to wait and see.

“That’s disappointing for all of us really – and especially for Pat – he’s in such a good place, but unfortunately it is part of football and it’s something we’ve got to work through and get him back as soon as we can.”
