Ruben Amorim joked he is “really annoyed” with Bruno Fernandes after missing two penalties for Manchester United.
Fernandes has scored the most penalties for United in Premier League history (23).
The midfielder established himself as the designated penalty-taker during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure and only briefly lost that responsibility during Cristiano Ronaldo’s second stint at the club.
Before this season, Fernandes had last missed a penalty against Chelsea in December 2023. The midfielder’s penalty record has been exemplary, but he sent a penalty over the crossbar against Fulham at Craven Cottage and his penalty was saved against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Fernandes converted from the spot in added time against Burnley to secure a late victory, but his two penalty misses have led to suggestions that a new penalty taker could be appointed.
Speaking at Friday’s press conference, Amorim was asked whether United could change their designated penalty taker, and he laughed as he said he was annoyed with Fernandes.
“No,” said Amorim about changing the penalty-taker. “I know that it’s not easy for him. But I think he has 70 penalties. He misses like nine. Two with me. So I’m really annoyed with that.
“But he’s really confident. He’s training the penalties. He’s trying to understand that people are watching the way he scores the penalties. So he will be ready. We have more guys also to score a penalty if he needs.”
Amorim was asked to clarify whether Fernandes remained the designated penalty taker and responded: “Yes, he’s the main taker. He scores a lot of goals. Penalties are passing this moment.
“We have other options. If we need, we can change. But I’m fully confident that Bruno will sort that out.”
