Technically gifted United academy defender set for huge audition on US tour – The Athletic

Manchester United defender Tyler Fredricson has everything to play for on the club’s pre-season tour.

Breakthrough last season

The young defender made his debut at the end of last season against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.

Despite losing the match 0-1, Fredricson was generally praised for his showing.

His manager Ruben Amorim claimed the defender “deserved better” than to be on the losing side after his display.

The Stockport native also played in an away fixture against Brentford the following month.

Possible loan deal

The Athletic report that Fredricson has recently been training with the senior team during pre-season preparations.

The American outlet states that, “a loan cannot be entirely ruled out for the 20-year-old, especially on the off-chance United were to add to their centre-back options this summer.”

They argue however, that “he has shown he can provide emergency cover after an accomplished debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in April.”

Opportunity to impress

Fredricson has also been given the number 33 shirt, perhaps highlighting a new level of responsibility in the first team squad.

United’s first pre-season game is in just a couple of days against Leeds United and he will be hoping for an opportunity to impress.

He will almost certainly be named in the United States tour and there is space within United’s squad for defenders.

Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof have both left the team this summer and with Ruben Amorim sticking to a back three, there are likely to be opportunities for Fredricson.

What’s more, United have not really been linked to buying defenders as reports have indicated that they will focus on a striker, midfielder and goalkeeper before bringing in a centre back.
