Manchester United have reportedly submitted an improved offer in an effort to complete a deal for Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens ahead of deadline day on Monday, September 1.
United are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper after a string of errors from Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana in the early stages of the season.
Onana has lost his starting spot to Bayindir, who has played all three Premier League games. Onana started in the humiliating defeat to Grimsby Town last week and was at fault for both goals that the Red Devils conceded in the first half, significantly damaging whatever hopes he harboured of being restored as the undisputed number one.
But Bayindir has not been any better than the Cameroonian. He made the mistake for Arsenal’s only goal in the 1-0 opening day defeat and also didn’t cover himself in glory for Burley’s second strike on Saturday at Old Trafford.
There is a growing consensus that neither of the two is fit for purpose and United need someone else. United have been in talks with Antwerp to try and strike a deal for Lammens, who has emerged as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe.
Galatasaray are also interested in Lammens but the shot-stopper’s preference is believed to be United, despite the Super Lig giants being prepared to offer a bigger financial package.
Earlier today, Fabrizio Romano revealed that United are still pushing for Lammens but they’ve lined up Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez as a fallback option.
Now, Mike McGrath of The Telegraph has revealed that United have made Lammens and improved offer as they race against time to agree a transfer.
According to McGrath, “Manchester United have made an improved offer to Senne Lammens and are determined to add a goalkeeper to Ruben Amorim’s squad before the summer transfer window closes on Monday.”
“Personal terms were not agreed with Lammens, 23, during talks earlier in the week and he also received proposals from Turkish club Galatasaray – but United have returned with a further offer.”
McGrath notes that if Lammens accepts the offer, he would take a medical immediately.
Antwerp are determined to get north of £20m for the 23-year-old.
