When does the January transfer window open? Premier League details confirmed for Man United and Man City

Manchester United and Manchester City cannot sign any new players until January after the summer window closed

The details for the January transfer window have been confirmed

The dust may have only just settled on the summer deadline day but it won’t be long until the January transfer window rolls into view.

Premier League clubs spent close to £3billion this summer across one of the most frantic windows in recent times.

There was a host of huge deals completed. Manchester United and Manchester City were among the biggest spenders as both clubs seek to have more successful seasons than they managed last time around.

Premier League sides will now have their squads until the new year, albeit they can sanction sales to clubs overseas where domestic windows are still open – such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

The January Premier League transfer window is scheduled to open on Thursday 1 January 2026 and will run until 7pm on Monday February 2.

The window will again close at 7pm, as it did this summer, rather than the previous 11pm deadline.

The Football Association, Premier League and EFL all agreed to an earlier finish to prevent clubs and league officials from working on transfers late into the night.

Premier League clubs must then submit a 25-man squad after the window closes.

Each club’s squad must contain no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the Home Grown Player (HGP) criteria. The rest of the squad, up to a total of 25, must be home grown.

The Premier League say: “A Home Grown Player means a player who, irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to The Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).

“A club’s Under-21 players are not included on the 25-man squad lists. These players are also eligible to play in the Premier League.

“For the 2025/26 Premier League season, Under-21 players will have been born on or after 1 January 2004.”
