Once known for his fiery temper, famous chef Marco Pierre White was keeping himself cool with some of the region’s finest ice cream at the weekend.
While spending time in the hospitality area at Manchester United Football Club, the Michelin star chef stopped by a stand for Grandpa Greene’s luxury ice cream
And it wasn’t just a win for the Reds on Sunday, as the 64-year-old heaped scoops of praise on the ice cream, which started life in the 1920s with Grandpa Greene himself using a churn in the back yard of his corner shop in Salford.

The ice cream maker shared a photo of Marco – himself a Man City fan – trying their ice cream and described it as ‘a pretty special moment for us’.
“Marco stopped by our Grandpa Greene’s stand while he was in the hospitality area at MUFC and spent some time chatting with the team and tasting a few of our ice creams,” a spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News.
“When I asked him what his favourite flavour he’d tried was, he said he loved our Old Fashioned White. That’s particularly special for us because it was Grandpa Greene’s original ice cream recipe dating back to the 1920s.
“It’s also the base for every flavour we produce today, so for a chef of Marco’s calibre to enjoy that flavour is a real testament to the quality of the milk we use and the ice cream base we build all our recipes from.”
They added: “During the visit we also asked him how he would describe our ice cream in one sentence. He smiled and said, ‘I only need two words, deliciously good’.
“For us, that perfectly sums up what we aim to do as a business: simple, traditional ice cream made properly using great ingredients.”
Grandpa Greene’s sells all kinds of flavours from wild strawberry and cookies & cream, to toffee fudge and pistachio.
It’s known for its breakfasts, afternoon teas and epic Easter treats including its giant Easter egg hot chocolates, pancakes stacks, shakes, waffles and more.
The Uppermill bistro opened in 2023 inside an old toilet block at King George V Park.
Last year it decided to expand its offering with an evening service on Friday and Saturday nights and a small plates menu which is tempting even more customers through the doors.
