Manchester United could face familiar problem after adding Andrey Santos to transfer wishlist
Man Utd are looking to strengthen their midfield this summer and they are considering a move for a player at a Premier League rival.
United are interested in Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos
Manchester United are interested in Chelsea’s Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, who will be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
United are yet to speak to Chelsea over a bid for the 22-year-old, but he is available for transfer this summer, and several Premier League clubs have sounded out his representatives over a potential move.
Attempts to strengthen the midfield have led to frustration so far at Old Trafford. Although they agreed an initial £35million deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta, they have missed out on top targets Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, having been priced out of moves by Manchester City and Tottenham respectively.
United are now interested in signing 22-year-old Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott and they retain an interest in Aurelien Tchouameni, should Real Madrid decide to sell the France international.
But Santos is another player under consideration, with United likely to sign at least two more midfielders after Manuel Ugarte suffered a suspected ACL injury during the World Cup.
Chelsea signed Brazilian youngster Santos from Vasco da Gama for £18million in 2023 and he has since had spells on loan at Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg.
He made 27 Premier League appearances for Chelsea last season, scoring one goal, but only 13 of them were starts and he is behind Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
United are looking at versatile midfielders who can play No. 6 and No. 8 this season, and value physicality and mobility. As someone with Premier League experience, Santos ticks several boxes.
But any deal will depend on the kind of fee Chelsea demand for Santos, who is being courted by other suitors in the Premier League. United were reluctant to get into bidding wars for Anderson, who joined City for £116million, and Fernandes, who signed for Spurs for £85million.
