Jeff Bezos has reportedly discussed joining a consortium who are in talks to acquire a stake in Liverpool – after Amazon struck a documentary deal with Manchester United.
Bezos, 62, is the founder and executive chairman of Amazon, having previously served as their chief executive and president. He has a net worth of £190million and is the fourth-wealthiest man in the world – behind Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, as well as Elon Musk – having been the richest from 2017 to 2021.
The businessman is said to have previously been interested in owning the NFL’s Washington Commanders. There were also links to the Seattle Seahawks earlier this year.
Sky News now claims that a consortium led by Amit Bhatia have approached him to join their syndicate of investors. The group already appears to have the backing of Indian billionaire steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, who just so happens to be Bhatia’s father-in-law.
Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, have confirmed their interest. They said in a statement on Tuesday: “An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”
Bhatia agreed to transfer his stake in Queens Park Rangers hours earlier. He also departed as a director.

Sky, however, cites a source when stressing that Bezos is not certain to join Bhatia’s group. Amazon already have links to football, previously broadcasting 20 Premier League matches each season for three years between 2022 and 2025.
Prime Video now airs 17 Champions League games of every captain and will continue to do so until 2031. They also air all of the Nations League fixtures and World Cup Qualifiers that do not feature England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales on pay-per-view.
Away from their live offering, there is the All or Nothing documentary series. It will follow United this coming season.
That deal is reportedly a record one compared to previous editions with Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, which is said to be earning the club over £10million. After announcing the agreement, United’s chief communications officer Toby Craig said: “Now is the right time to open our doors, so that for the first time our fans around the world can see behind the scenes of a club which means so much to so many people.
“This documentary will showcase Manchester United’s unique people, ambition and culture; from the iconic atmosphere at Old Trafford to the work that goes on behind the scenes every day at Carrington. We will share some of the stories of this historic club both with our fans and new audiences around the world as we compete at the highest level, both domestically and in the Champions League.”
